I was sitting in a coffee shop when a man and his mother took the table beside me. From the start, their conversation was hard to ignore. He was complaining about his “horrible” wife, saying she was controlling and impossible to live with. His phone kept buzzing on the table, but he didn’t bother picking it up.At one point, he said he was leaving her that very day. Half-joking, I asked,
“Want me to answer your phone for you?” He laughed and nodded, clearly amused. A moment later, it rang again — and I answered.To my shock, it was my sister on the other end. She sounded worried, her voice small. “Hello? Who is this? Why are you answering Sam’s phone?”My stomach dropped.
The man in front of me — the one tearing apart his wife’s character — was my brother-in-law.I walked outside with the phone still pressed to my ear. Quietly, I told her, “He’s here. With his mom. Talking about leaving you today.” She didn’t cry, but the silence on her end was enough to break my heart.
When I returned to the table, I set the phone down and looked him straight in the eye. “You know that wife you’re talking about? She’s my sister.”His smirk disappeared instantly.
