A thimble is a small tool used in hand sewing to protect your finger while pushing a needle through fabric. It is usually worn on the middle finger or thumb, helping prevent painful needle pricks and allowing you to apply more pressure when sewing thicker or tougher materials. This makes stitching smoother, safer, and more controlled—especially when working with multiple layers.

Thimbles come in many sizes, styles, and designs. Some are plain and practical, while others feature decorative patterns or textured surfaces to help grip the needle. While early thimbles were sometimes made from leather, today they are most commonly made from metal, though plastic and resin versions are also widely used. The word “thimble” is believed to come from the older term “thumb-bell,” since the earliest versions were often worn on the thumb.

Thimbles have a long history, dating back thousands of years. Early examples have been found from ancient civilizations such as China and the Roman Empire, made from materials like bone, bronze, or ivory. In Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, thimbles were sometimes crafted from silver or gold, making them valuable household items and even family keepsakes.

There are several types of thimbles, each designed for different needs. A closed-top thimble offers full protection for general sewing. An open-top thimble gives extra flexibility and room for long nails. Leather thimbles are soft and comfortable, while ring thimbles are adjustable and popular for quilting. No matter the type, the main purpose remains the same: safer sewing with better control.

  • Our neighbor put a note on our car: “One car per house!” Soon afterward, she came over herself. I opened the door to greet her. She was in a pastel pink cardigan, a matching headband, and white capri pants. “Our HOA—very friendly, but firm—has rules: only one car per household in the driveway,” she stated. I blinked. “One car?” “Yes,” she answered more sternly. “No exceptions. It keeps us all orderly.” Jack looked at her. “Both our cars fit on the driveway, we’re not on the street.” “Still, two cars isn’t allowed. One house, one driveway, one car. The rule is for everyone,” she said with a tilt of her head. She left. We ignored her warning. Three days later, both of our cars had been towed. She stood outside, smiling widely. ME: “Wow! You really did it!” HER: “What’s so funny?!” ME: “Nothing. Just that YOU OWE US $25,000 NOW.” HER: nervous gulp “What—What do you mean?” I pointed at the mark on the tag, laughing. “Bet you overlooked that symbol!
