Vertical ridges on nails are quite common and, in many cases, are a natural part of aging. As the body changes over time, nails may develop subtle lines or shifts in texture. However, when ridges become more noticeable—especially alongside brittleness, weakness, or changes in color—they can sometimes reflect underlying nutritional gaps. Supporting nail health begins with paying attention to what we eat, as the body relies on essential nutrients to maintain strong and healthy nail growth.

Protein plays a central role in nail strength because nails are primarily made of keratin, a type of protein. Including foods such as eggs, fish, poultry, beans, and dairy products in your daily meals can help support this structure. In addition, certain  vitamins are especially beneficial. Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is linked to improved nail thickness and durability and can be found in foods like nuts, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and salmon. Minerals such as iron and zinc are also important, as they contribute to healthy cell production and help prevent weakness or irregular nail growth.

 

Healthy fats and proper hydration are equally important for maintaining smooth, flexible nails. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds, help reduce dryness and improve overall nail appearance. Drinking enough water throughout the day supports hydration from within, which can positively affect both nails and skin. When the body is well-nourished and hydrated, nails are more likely to grow evenly and maintain a healthier texture over time.

While small changes in nail appearance are often harmless, it’s important to pay attention to sudden or unusual differences. Deep grooves, significant discoloration, or discomfort may require professional evaluation to rule out other concerns. In most cases, though, consistent nutrition and simple lifestyle habits can make a meaningful difference. With patience and regular care, nails can gradually become stronger, smoother, and more resilient, reflecting overall well-being from the inside out.
