There is no single industry rule that says every fuel door must be on the left or the right. Automakers choose a side based on how the rest of the vehicle is engineered. Beneath the floor are the fuel tank, exhaust, suspension, wiring, brakes, and structural components that protect the cabin. Engineers must route the filler neck from the exterior door to the tank without interfering with heat, crash structures, or a crowded underbody. On one vehicle, the cleanest route may be on the driver’s side. On another, the same manufacturer may place it on the opposite side because the exhaust, spare-tire well, or frame rails leave fewer options.

Manufacturing also makes the decision harder to change. Moving a fuel door is not simply a matter of relocating a panel. It can require new body stampings, different fuel lines, and changes to the assembly process. If the existing design already works with a vehicle platform, manufacturers usually keep it. Safety is another major factor. The system must withstand crashes, contain fuel, control fumes, and keep hot exhaust components away from the tank. Those requirements can matter more than making every vehicle line up with the pump on the same side.

That is why two vehicles from the same brand can have completely different fuel-door locations. Their platforms, wheelbases, underbody layouts, and structural designs may differ. Even the driver’s side is not automatically the “correct” choice. Some vehicles place the filler door on the passenger side simply because that is where the plumbing and surrounding structure allow the best design. The variety you see at a gas station is not random. It is the result of many separate engineering decisions arriving at the same pump.

Fortunately, you do not need to memorize where every vehicle’s fuel door is located. Look at the dashboard fuel-pump icon. It usually has a small triangle or arrow beside it, pointing toward the side where the filler door is located. Check it before pulling into a pump, and you can avoid the awkward realization that you stopped on the wrong side. The fuel door goes wherever the vehicle’s engineering allows it to work. The dashboard arrow is the simple rule most drivers actually need.
