Why Do Hotels Put a “Bed Runner” at the Foot of the Bed? Many Guests Use It Every Day Without Knowing Why

Hotels place the cloth across the bed, known as a bed runner, mainly for practical and hygiene reasons.

It protects the clean sheets from dirt, luggage, and shoes that guests often place on the bed. It also helps prevent stains from food or spills.

For housekeeping, it’s easier to clean or replace than changing full bedding, saving time and effort.

At the same time, it adds a decorative touch, making the room look more stylish and finished.

Guests often use it as a safe spot for bags or clothes instead of placing them on the main sheets.

It is not meant for sleeping and is usually removed or moved aside during use.

Overall, it combines cleanliness, convenience, and design in one simple hotel detail.

That’s why most hotels always include it on the bed.

  • At 6, I promised my best friend we’d go to prom together—12 years later, mom said I could go with him only on ONE condition and revealed the shocking truth. Noah became my best friend in first grade after we discovered we both hated raisins and loved dinosaurs. He had Down syndrome, but that was never what defined our friendship. He was funny, stubborn, could remember baseball statistics from years ago, and had a habit of telling me exactly what he thought, including telling me that my drawings looked “like potatoes with arms.” One afternoon, our teacher announced she was getting married. While everyone argued about wedding cakes, Noah proudly declared that his wedding would have chocolate cake and “no slow, boring songs.” A boy across the table laughed. “Who’s going to marry you? Nobody will.” I didn’t understand exactly why he’d said it, but I saw Noah’s smile disappear. “That’s stupid,” I snapped. “Somebody will love Noah.” Noah looked at me seriously. “Would you?” “Maybe. But first we have to go to prom.” “What’s prom?” “A dance when we’re almost grown-ups.” He held out his pinkie. “Promise?” “Promise.” Twelve years later, Noah remembered every word. By then, we’d survived different classes, my parents’ divorce, his endless attempts to teach me baseball, and my first heartbreak, when he arrived with ice cream and his heart-melting smile and announced, “I told you that guy was an idiot.” So when senior prom arrived, going together didn’t feel like fulfilling some childhood charity promise. Noah was my best friend. There was nobody I’d rather go with. That evening, he arrived in a suit and bow tie, holding my corsage and grinning like he’d won the World Series. Mom opened the door. The second she saw him, something changed. Her smile vanished, and for several seconds, she simply stared at Noah. Then she quickly told him I was almost ready and came upstairs. I was putting on my earrings when she entered my room and locked the door. “You can go with Noah tonight,” she said, “but only under one condition.” I laughed. “What, home by midnight?” “No.” Her hands were trembling. “You have to hear the truth I owe you first.” My stomach tightened. “What truth?” She sat beside me and took both my hands. “About him and about me.” Then her eyes filled with tears. Mom took a shaky breath and began talking. Her confession made my blood run cold.
