Check Comment

When my husband and I divorced, he kept the house and quickly moved his new girlfriend in. I didn’t argue. I packed my belongings, walked away, and began rebuilding my life. He believed he had won everything, never realizing how much of the home’s comfort depended on things I had been paying for.

A week later, my phone rang. It was my ex-husband, furious and demanding that I “fix this pile of stones.” According to him, nothing worked the way it used to. The smart-home controls were unavailable, the security system had stopped functioning as expected, and the irrigation system was no longer operating normally.

I listened as he complained, struggling to understand why everything had suddenly changed. For years, I had managed the household subscriptions, paid the bills, and maintained the connected services. He had enjoyed the convenience without paying attention to the arrangements that made it possible.

After the divorce, I canceled the contracts and closed the accounts registered in my name. Those services were my responsibility, not permanent gifts attached to the property. Once I moved out, I had every reason to stop paying for a home that was no longer mine.

My ex-husband had confused ownership of the building with ownership of every service connected to it. He had received the house through the divorce, but that did not mean I was obligated to continue financing its conveniences or managing the household for him and his new girlfriend.

Now, if he wanted everything restored, he would have to contact the providers, arrange the necessary installations, and establish new accounts in his own name. He would also have to cover the costs himself. His anger could not turn my former responsibilities into permanent obligations.

I understood why he was frustrated, but I refused to feel guilty. He had made his choices, and I had made mine. I was no longer responsible for maintaining the lifestyle he expected to enjoy after our marriage ended.

The house was still his, and I had no intention of taking that away. What I had reclaimed was my independence. He got the property, but I finally stopped paying for a life I was no longer part of.
