Jami Gertz was earning more than her father before she was old enough to vote. But the teenager from an ordinary Illinois family would eventually become associated with a fortune that dwarfed most Hollywood paychecks. Behind the headlines about the world’s richest actress lies a marriage that began with her paying the bills, and an entirely unexpected financial

Raised in Glenview, Illinois, Jami Gertz entered acting through a nationwide talent search, not family connections. Roles in films including The Lost Boys helped establish her career, but early success also brought financial responsibilities that complicated life at home. When she married financier Tony Ressler in 1989, she was the established earner. She has recalled paying for their first house and a vacation—a detail that challenges assumptions about how their partnership began.

Ressler subsequently co-founded Apollo Global Management and Ares Management, building the investment career behind their family’s multibillion-dollar wealth. Together, they became involved in Atlanta Hawks ownership and supported causes spanning education, healthcare, the arts, and Jewish organizations. Gertz also serves on the Melanoma Research Alliance board. Although “richest actress” rankings often blur personal and shared family fortunes, her story reaches beyond that label: an early career, a lasting partnership, and a life not defined solely by Hollywood.

  • My husband pushed me to adopt 4-year-old twin boys for months so we could be a real family — when I accidentally overheard his real reason, I packed our bags. My husband, Joshua (45M), and I have been married for 10 years. We tried for children for years. Treatments, doctors, hope… and then disappointment. Eventually, we told ourselves it just wasn’t meant to be. So we worked, traveled a little, and learned how to be happy with what we had. But about six months ago, something in Joshua changed. He became obsessed with the idea of having children. He said our house felt empty. That something was missing. That he wanted a real family with me. He begged. Pleaded. Promised me this would make us complete. He even asked me to leave my job — said it would help us get approved faster if I could stay home with the kids. That should have been my first warning. But I loved him. So I did it. I took a severance package, walked away from my career, and threw myself into the process. A few months later, we adopted twin boys. Four years old. Beautiful, quiet, a little shy. Joshua found their profile himself and pushed hard for them specifically. I thought this was the beginning of something good. And for a few weeks, it felt like it was. Then everything shifted. Joshua started pulling away. He stayed late at work and locked himself in his home office for hours, saying he was too tired. Meanwhile, I was home alone with the boys, running on no sleep. I told myself he was overwhelmed. That this was normal. That we’d adjust. I was wrong. Last week, the boys finally fell asleep for their afternoon nap. Joshua must have thought I was asleep too. But I wasn’t. I got up and walked toward his office. The door was slightly open. I was about to push it when I heard his voice. Low. Urgent. “I can’t keep lying to her,” he whispered into the phone. “She thinks I wanted a family with her…” My blood ran cold. Then he said something that made my hands start shaking— “But I adopted the boys NOT because of this.” Then he started sobbing. ⬇️
