Have you ever returned home from vacation and wondered whether your freezer lost power while you were away? A popular trick involves freezing a cup of water, placing a coin on top of the ice, and leaving it in the freezer. When you return, check the coin’s position: if it has sunk, the ice may have melted and refrozen, suggesting a possible power interruption.

However, this trick cannot reliably tell you how long the power was out or whether food is safe to eat. If you suspect your freezer lost power, food that remained at or below 40°F (4°C) may be safe, while perishable food that stayed above that temperature for more than two hours should generally be discarded. When in doubt, follow official food-safety guidance rather than relying on the coin trick…

Next Post: My husband pushed me to adopt 4-year-old twin boys for months so we could be a real family — when I accidentally overheard his real reason, I packed our bags. My husband, Joshua (45M), and I have been married for 10 years. We tried for children for years. Treatments, doctors, hope… and then disappointment. Eventually, we told ourselves it just wasn’t meant to be. So we worked, traveled a little, and learned how to be happy with what we had. But about six months ago, something in Joshua changed. He became obsessed with the idea of having children. He said our house felt empty. That something was missing. That he wanted a real family with me. He begged. Pleaded. Promised me this would make us complete. He even asked me to leave my job — said it would help us get approved faster if I could stay home with the kids. That should have been my first warning. But I loved him. So I did it. I took a severance package, walked away from my career, and threw myself into the process. A few months later, we adopted twin boys. Four years old. Beautiful, quiet, a little shy. Joshua found their profile himself and pushed hard for them specifically. I thought this was the beginning of something good. And for a few weeks, it felt like it was. Then everything shifted. Joshua started pulling away. He stayed late at work and locked himself in his home office for hours, saying he was too tired. Meanwhile, I was home alone with the boys, running on no sleep. I told myself he was overwhelmed. That this was normal. That we’d adjust. I was wrong. Last week, the boys finally fell asleep for their afternoon nap. Joshua must have thought I was asleep too. But I wasn’t. I got up and walked toward his office. The door was slightly open. I was about to push it when I heard his voice. Low. Urgent. “I can’t keep lying to her,” he whispered into the phone. “She thinks I wanted a family with her…” My blood ran cold. Then he said something that made my hands start shaking— “But I adopted the boys NOT because of this.” Then he started sobbing. ⬇️
