For generations, making the bed properly meant following the same familiar routine: a fitted sheet, a top sheet, and a blanket or duvet. However, more people are now questioning whether that extra top sheet is really necessary.

One of the biggest reasons people are abandoning it is comfort. Restless sleepers often wake up with the top sheet twisted around their legs or pushed completely off the bed. Instead of providing comfort, it can become an unnecessary annoyance throughout the night.

Temperature is another important factor. People who naturally sleep warm may find that an additional layer traps too much heat. Removing the top sheet can make the bed feel lighter and more breathable, particularly during warmer months.

There is also the convenience of having fewer items to wash. Traditional bedding requires regularly cleaning multiple layers, which means more laundry, drying, folding, and time spent making the bed. Removing one layer can simplify the entire routine.

Washable duvet covers have made this change even easier. Instead of relying on a separate top sheet, people can use a removable cover that protects the duvet and can be washed regularly. This provides a practical alternative without sacrificing cleanliness.

However, skipping the top sheet doesn’t mean neglecting bedding hygiene. Duvet covers should still be washed regularly because they collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, and everyday dirt. The same applies to pillowcases and fitted sheets.

Of course, traditional bedding still has its advantages. Some people enjoy the crisp feeling of a fresh top sheet, while others appreciate having an additional layer that can be adjusted independently during the night.

Ultimately, there is no universal rule for making a bed. Whether you prefer three layers or just two, the best arrangement is the one that keeps you comfortable, helps you sleep well, and makes your daily routine easier.

Previous Post: My mother disowned me for marrying a single mom — she laughed at my life, but when she saw it three years later, she whispered, “Oh my God… what is this?” My dad walked out when I was five, so my mother raised me by herself. Money was never an issue. She came from a wealthy family and made sure I had every advantage growing up. Private schools. Piano lessons. A carefully planned future. But none of it ever felt unconditional. To my mother, I was an investment, and she already knew exactly what kind of life I was supposed to have. Then, at twenty-seven, I introduced her to Anna. Anna was a single mom raising her seven-year-old son while working nights at a clinic and driving an old beat-up car. My mother took one look at her and immediately decided she wasn’t good enough. “She comes with baggage,” she said flatly. “And you’re throwing your future away!” I told her I was marrying Anna anyway. Mom stood up, straightened her blazer, and looked me right in the eye. “If you marry her, don’t ever ask me for anything again. You’re choosing that life.” So I chose it. Anna and I moved into a small rental. Nothing fancy. But the bills were paid, the fridge was full, and our home was peaceful. A few months after the wedding, her son started calling me “Dad.” Nobody asked him to. It just happened. And honestly, I was happy. For three years, my mother and I didn’t speak. Then last week, she suddenly called. “I heard you have… a family now,” she said. “I’m in town. I’ll stop by tomorrow. I want to see how badly you’ve ruined your life.” She arrived the next afternoon dressed perfectly, with the same judgmental look I remembered. I opened the door and let her in. She walked in. Looked around. Then her expression completely changed. She grabbed the doorframe and whispered, “Oh my God… what is this?” ⬇️ ⬇️
