Here’s how often should you wash your hair, according to a dermat0l0gist

Experts generally recommend washing your hair between three and five times a week, depending on your scalp type, daily routine, and environmental exposure. This range helps maintain a clean, balanced scalp without stripping away too much natural oil. Regular washing keeps the scalp healthy, reduces buildup, and supports the effectiveness of hair treatments and conditioners.

Dermatologists emphasize that washing your hair frequently does not cause the scalp to produce more oil. Oil production is primarily determined by genetics and hormones, not shampoo use. What matters most is choosing a routine suited to your individual scalp needs and lifestyle.

Washing within the recommended range helps remove excess sebum, sweat, pollutants, and product residue. Clearing this buildup improves follicle oxygenation, allowing hair to grow in a cleaner, healthier environment. It also reduces irritation caused by bacteria or fungi that thrive on unwashed scalps.

Lifestyle factors can shift your ideal washing frequency. People who exercise often, sweat heavily, or live in humid climates may need more frequent washing. Conversely, those in dry or cold climates, or those with very curly or textured hair, may benefit from fewer washes to retain natural moisture.

Going too long without washing can create problems. An unwashed scalp may become itchy, flaky, or inflamed, and severe buildup can even lead to temporary shedding. These symptoms are signs that the scalp’s natural balance has been disrupted.

To protect your hair, experts suggest using gentle or sulfate-free shampoos when needed. Conditioners should be applied only to the mid-lengths and ends to avoid weighing down the roots or causing scalp residue. A nourishing weekly mask can offer added moisture and repair.

Small daily habits also make a difference. Washing with lukewarm water prevents dryness, while massaging the scalp with fingertips encourages healthy circulation. Rinsing thoroughly ensures no product remains to irritate the skin.

As a simple guideline, most people find that washing their hair three to five times per week provides the healthiest balance — keeping the scalp clean, comfortable, and well-maintained without over-drying or neglecting natural oils.
