Tension erupted during a Miss Universe pre-pageant event when executive Nawat Itsaragrisilpublicly criticized Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, sparking backlash from contestants and fans alike. The confrontation took place during a live-streamed meeting on the official Miss Universe Facebook page, ahead of this month’s highly anticipated competition.
The issue began when Itsaragrisil accused Bosch of refusing to participate in a promotional photoshoot meant to highlight Thailand, this year’s host country. He claimed her decision came under instruction from her national director, a statement Bosch reportedly denied. The exchange quickly became uncomfortable when Itsaragrisil called Bosch a “dummy,” a remark that drew disapproval from the other contestants.
Bosch, maintaining composure, responded that she deserved respect and stated, “Because I have a voice,” after being interrupted multiple times. Her reply prompted further tension as the executive questioned why she continued to speak. The situation escalated to the point that he called for security, but other contestants objected, urging calm and fairness.
Following the dispute, Bosch and several other contestants—including reigning Miss Universe Victoria Kjær Theilvig—left the room in protest. Some participants tried to de-escalate the situation, with Miss Bonaire suggesting that Bosch be invited back, emphasizing unity and mutual respect among the women.
Itsaragrisil attempted to regain order, warning contestants that those wishing to stay in the competition should sit down. The incident, however, left a strong impression, as many viewed Bosch’s actions as a stand for dignity and professionalism in the face of public criticism.
In response to the backlash, Itsaragrisil later posted a video apology on social media, expressing regret if anyone felt disrespected or uncomfortable. He also claimed to have apologized directly to the women present, hoping to restore peace and professionalism ahead of the global pageant event.
