A Sydney father-of-two is being hailed as a hero after risking his life to disarm a gunman during a terrifying mass shooting at Bondi Beach, in an incident that has left the community shaken and in awe of his courage.
Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, who owns a fruit shop in Sutherland, had no formal training or experience with firearms. By all accounts, he was an ordinary member of the public caught in an extraordinary and dangerous situation. Yet when violence erupted, he made an immediate and life-altering decision to intervene rather than flee.
Despite the overwhelming danger, Ahmed stepped into the line of fire in an attempt to stop the gunman. In what witnesses have described as a moment of pure instinct and bravery, he acted within seconds, fully aware that he was putting his own life at extreme risk.
During the confrontation, Ahmed was shot twice. He is now recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery for his injuries. Medical staff continue to monitor his condition closely as he begins what is expected to be a difficult recovery process.
“He’s in hospital and we don’t know exactly what’s going on inside,” his cousin Mustafa told 7News, reflecting the family’s anxiety and hope. “We do hope he will be fine. He’s a hero 100 per cent.”
The gunman is seen stumbling backwards as control of the weapon changes hands. In a highly dangerous moment, Ahmed then points the gun at the suspect as he retreats toward a nearby bridge, creating a crucial pause in the attack and potentially preventing further harm to bystanders.
Further footage later shows Ahmed seated on the ground, visibly injured and bleeding from a gunshot wound to his leg. Despite his condition, he remains conscious as shocked bystanders rush to his aid. One man is seen placing a towel against the wound in an attempt to slow the bleeding, while others and emergency responders move in to support him and secure the area.
Even in this injured state, Ahmed manages to carefully place the recovered firearm against a nearby tree, ensuring it is no longer a threat while help arrives.
Authorities and witnesses have since credited his actions with helping to bring a chaotic and dangerous situation under greater control, with many describing his intervention as an extraordinary act of bravery carried out by an ordinary man in an impossible moment.
