Snakes appearing in your garden can be unsettling, but plants rarely attract them directly. Instead, snakes seek shelter, shade, moisture, and food. Certain landscaping choices can unintentionally create ideal habitats.

Six types of plants and garden features may encourage snake visits.

  1. Dense ground cover: Ivy, creeping fig, and vinca provide hiding places and attract insects and rodents that snakes hunt.
  2. Tall ornamental grasses: Pampas grass, fountain grass, and miscanthus create shaded spaces where snakes can hide, especially when left untrimmed.
  3. Fruit-bearing trees and bushes: Fig trees, mango trees, and berry bushes may attract rodents through fallen fruit, indirectly attracting snakes.
  4. Water-loving plants: Water lilies, papyrus, and canna lilies often grow near moist environments that attract frogs and insects, providing potential food sources.
  5. Thick shrubs: Overgrown boxwood, juniper, and large hedges offer dark, protected hiding places.
  6. Mulched garden beds: Mulch retains moisture and warmth, potentially creating comfortable resting areas for snakes.

Four plants are traditionally believed to repel snakes, although scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited. These include lemongrass, marigolds, garlic, and snake plants. Their scents are sometimes suggested as deterrents, but none should be considered a reliable snake repellent.

The most effective prevention comes from changing the conditions that attract snakes. Keep grass short, remove brush piles and garden debris, seal gaps around foundations, control rodents, avoid excessive watering, and store firewood above ground.

It is also important to remember that most snakes are beneficial to the environment because they help control rodent populations.

Ultimately, no plant magically summons snakes or guarantees their absence. Snakes respond primarily to food, shelter, and suitable environmental conditions. Maintaining an open, tidy garden and reducing pest activity can make your yard less inviting while preserving a healthy balance with nature.

  • A BIKER CAME TO MY WIFE’S GRAVE EVERY SINGLE WEEK, AND FOR MONTHS, I HAD NO IDEA WHO HE WAS. For six months, I watched him from inside my car. Same day. Same hour. Every Saturday at exactly 2 PM, he would ride into the cemetery on his Harley, park beside the old oak tree, and walk directly to Emily’s grave. Then he would sit beside her headstone for exactly one hour. He never brought flowers. Never left a message. Never spoke loudly enough for me to hear. He simply sat cross-legged in the grass, his head bowed, as if he were carrying a grief too heavy to bear standing up. The first time I saw him, I assumed he had the wrong grave. It was a huge cemetery. Mistakes could happen. But then he returned the following Saturday. And the Saturday after that. And every Saturday that followed. Week after week, this complete stranger mourned my wife as though she had been a part of his life too. At first, I was simply puzzled. Then I became angry. Who was this man? How had he known Emily? Why was he coming to see her every week when some members of her own family hardly visited? Emily had passed away fourteen months earlier after a battle with breast cancer. She was only forty-three. We had been married for twenty years. Two children. A quiet house. An ordinary life. At least, that was what I believed. Nothing about the life I knew my wife had lived seemed to connect her to this man. Emily had been a pediatric nurse. She volunteered at church. She drove a silver minivan and packed snacks for every school function. Her idea of rebellion was ordering dessert before dinner. Yet this biker mourned her as though he had lost someone he could never replace. Sometimes, while watching from my car, I saw his shoulders trembling. Sometimes, before walking away, he would place one weathered hand against her headstone and leave it there for several seconds. As though he were saying goodbye to her one more time. By the third month, I couldn’t stand it anymore. That Saturday, I got out of my car and walked toward him. He heard my footsteps but didn’t turn around. His hand remained against Emily’s name. “Excuse me,” I said, my voice harsher than I meant it to be. “I’m Emily’s husband. I think it’s time you told me who you are.” For several seconds, he remained silent. Then he slowly rose to his feet, turned toward me, and looked like a man who had been expecting me to ask that question for six months. Finally, he said: “Your wife was my…” Full story in 1st comment 👇
