Previous Post: My 16-year-old daughter stayed awake the entire night sewing a dress for her classmate — and the next morning, the girl’s mother said to me, “Do you know why she really did it?” Since my husband died, it had been just Lily and me. I couldn’t give her every material thing, but I made sure she never once doubted that she was loved. Lily loved sewing and dreamed about becoming a fashion designer. For several nights, though, she’d been up late, working on a dress that wasn’t meant for her. “Sweetheart, it’s nearly one. Can’t this wait?” I asked, dragging a chair beside her. “Annie’s singing in the school concert, Mom. Her mother can’t afford a dress.” Annie was a girl in Lily’s grade, with a mother who cleaned offices at night. Lily flexed her tired fingers before picking up the needle again. “The boys already laugh at what she wears. Yesterday, she asked the teacher if she could sing from behind the curtain.” “Oh, honey…” “I want her to wear something she doesn’t have to hide in.” Lily laid the skirt across her knees. “She has such a pretty voice, Mom. You should hear her.” Then she folded the blue cardigan her father had bought her and slipped it into a bag. I reached out, but she tugged the bag away. “She can have this, too.” I drove her to school. She was glowing with excitement to help Annie. That afternoon, I waited for Lily’s story about how things had gone. Instead, she came home with swollen eyes and slammed her bedroom door shut. “Did someone say something about the dress?” “Please, Mom. Leave it.” I cooked her favorite grilled cheese. She didn’t even glance at it. Later, I heard her sobbing, but when I knocked, she snapped, “I said I don’t want to talk!” I thought Annie might have turned down the dress or said something that hurt Lily. But nothing could have prepared me for what came after. The doorbell jolted me awake the next morning. A woman stood on the porch with a thin girl beside her, the girl wearing that blue cardigan. There was something painfully familiar about the girl’s face, though I couldn’t figure out why. “Is Lily home?” the woman asked. “Yes, but it’s six in the morning. What happened? I’m her mother.” Her chin began to tremble. “You don’t know why Lily really gave Annie that dress?” “To help her. Lily told me what’s been happening at school.” The woman burst into tears and held out a small box. The second I saw it, my face went pale. “You don’t know your daughter at all,” she whispered. “I’m sorry I have to tell you this… Type KEYS and I’ll continue. • A BIKER CAME TO MY WIFE’S GRAVE EVERY SINGLE WEEK, AND FOR MONTHS, I HAD NO IDEA WHO HE WAS. For six months, I watched him from inside my car. Same day. Same hour. Every Saturday at exactly 2 PM, he would ride into the cemetery on his Harley, park beside the old oak tree, and walk directly to Emily’s grave. Then he would sit beside her headstone for exactly one hour. He never brought flowers. Never left a message. Never spoke loudly enough for me to hear. He simply sat cross-legged in the grass, his head bowed, as if he were carrying a grief too heavy to bear standing up. The first time I saw him, I assumed he had the wrong grave. It was a huge cemetery. Mistakes could happen. But then he returned the following Saturday. And the Saturday after that. And every Saturday that followed. Week after week, this complete stranger mourned my wife as though she had been a part of his life too. At first, I was simply puzzled. Then I became angry. Who was this man? How had he known Emily? Why was he coming to see her every week when some members of her own family hardly visited? Emily had passed away fourteen months earlier after a battle with breast cancer. She was only forty-three. We had been married for twenty years. Two children. A quiet house. An ordinary life. At least, that was what I believed. Nothing about the life I knew my wife had lived seemed to connect her to this man. Emily had been a pediatric nurse. She volunteered at church. She drove a silver minivan and packed snacks for every school function. Her idea of rebellion was ordering dessert before dinner. Yet this biker mourned her as though he had lost someone he could never replace. Sometimes, while watching from my car, I saw his shoulders trembling. Sometimes, before walking away, he would place one weathered hand against her headstone and leave it there for several seconds. As though he were saying goodbye to her one more time. By the third month, I couldn’t stand it anymore. That Saturday, I got out of my car and walked toward him. He heard my footsteps but didn’t turn around. His hand remained against Emily’s name. “Excuse me,” I said, my voice harsher than I meant it to be. “I’m Emily’s husband. I think it’s time you told me who you are.” For several seconds, he remained silent. Then he slowly rose to his feet, turned toward me, and looked like a man who had been expecting me to ask that question for six months. Finally, he said: “Your wife was my…” Full story in 1st comment 👇
