Hotel rooms often include little comforts that make a stay more enjoyable, from soft slippers and toiletries to pens and notepads. But many guests wonder: “What can I actually take home?” The answer depends on whether an item is complimentary, disposable, or intended to remain in the room.

Small toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, soap, shower caps, toothbrush kits, and other grooming products are generally provided for guest use. Disposable slippers are also commonly considered complimentary, although policies can vary between hotels.

Hotel-branded pens, notepads, postcards, brochures, and promotional materials are usually safe to take because they are intended to advertise the property. Individual tea bags, coffee pods, sugar packets, and creamers may also be complimentary, but it is wise to check before assuming.

Minibar items are different. Snacks, bottled drinks, and other minibar products may carry additional charges, and some modern minibars use sensors that automatically register when an item is removed. Always check the room’s price list before taking or consuming anything.

Items such as towels, sheets, pillows, blankets, duvets, hair dryers, irons, kettles, coffee machines, remote controls, artwork, and decorative objects generally belong to the hotel. Taking these items can result in replacement charges, particularly when they are expensive or reusable.

Bathrobes can be a gray area. Some hotels allow guests to purchase them or even include them as complimentary gifts, while others expect them to remain in the room. Key cards and religious books can also be subject to individual hotel policies, so never assume they are yours to keep.

If you accidentally take something that belongs to the hotel, contact the property and explain what happened. Staff can tell you whether they want the item returned or whether a replacement charge applies. Being honest is usually the easiest way to resolve the situation.

The safest rule is simple: if you aren’t sure, ask. Check the hotel’s information booklet, website, or front desk for details about complimentary items and replacement prices. A pen, postcard, or small toiletry may make a harmless souvenir, but towels, equipment, furniture, and decorations should normally stay behind.
