My phone rang with my ex-husband’s furious voice just days after he moved his new girlfriend into the house we once shared. “You need to fix this pile of stones!” he snapped, demanding that I restore the smart-home features he had suddenly lost. I listened as he complained about the internet, security system, irrigation controls, and connected devices that no longer worked the way he expected. During our divorce, he had kept the property, apparently believing he had walked away with everything that made the house comfortable. What he had overlooked was that I had opened and paid for the accounts behind many of those conveniences. After we separated, I canceled my own subscriptions and closed the accounts that were still in my name. Now, with a new partner under his roof, my ex was discovering that owning a house did not automatically mean someone else would continue paying to run it.

At first, he insisted that I had deliberately ruined his home and that fixing everything was my responsibility. I reminded him that the property was his, but the service agreements were mine, and our divorce had not required me to maintain them indefinitely. His frustration grew as he realized the systems would not simply return to normal because he demanded it. Restoring the setup meant contacting the providers, arranging any necessary installations, and accepting the costs himself. He had grown so accustomed to me handling the details that he barely seemed to recognize the work involved. I had managed the accounts, paid the bills, and dealt with the practical problems for years, so he apparently assumed those responsibilities would continue even after our marriage ended. But when he demanded that I make everything work again, I finally understood how deeply he had confused my past help with a permanent obligation—and I knew my answer would not be what he wanted to hear.

I refused to reopen my accounts or take responsibility for services connected to a property I no longer owned. If he wanted the same conveniences, he would need to establish new agreements in his own name and cover the expenses himself. That could mean installation charges, replacement equipment, or new monthly fees, depending on what the providers required. The distinction mattered financially as well as practically: a mortgage or property settlement determines certain responsibilities for a home, while internet and security subscriptions are separate agreements. If any dispute arose over what the divorce order required, he could consult an attorney rather than expect me to resolve it. I kept records of the accounts I had canceled and the services that had been billed to me, just in case questions about the separation later reached court. I was not trying to take his house away; I was simply ending the financial and personal commitments that were no longer mine to carry.

After that conversation, I stopped arguing and let him make his own arrangements. The house remained his, but the responsibility for running it now belonged to him, too. He could contact the providers, compare service plans, and decide which smart-home features were worth the cost. For me, the experience brought an unexpected sense of freedom. During our marriage, I had treated countless small tasks as ordinary parts of keeping a household together, rarely considering how much time, money, and attention they required. After the divorce, those same tasks had become invisible expectations that my ex believed should follow him into his next chapter. They did not. I had no interest in disrupting his new life, but neither was I willing to finance it or manage it from a distance. He had kept the house, and I had reclaimed something just as important: the right to decide where my own responsibilities ended.
