A flashing green light slices through traffic, and your heartbeat suddenly spikes. You hesitate for a moment. Is it an emergency? Should you move aside, slow down, or simply continue driving? In those few seconds, someone’s treatment, pain relief, or fragile stability may depend on what happens next.

That unexpected green flash is rarely about speed, sirens, or demanding attention. More often, it signals a quiet mission taking place in the middle of ordinary traffic. Behind that light could be a frail man traveling to dialysis, a woman fighting through chemotherapy, a patient returning home after surgery, or someone who simply cannot reach essential medical care without assistance.

The vehicle may look completely ordinary from the outside. It might be a private car, a transport vehicle, or another form of patient transportation. But inside could be a person whose health depends on arriving at a clinic, hospital, treatment center, or home safely and on time.

This is why a flashing green light can carry a meaning that is easy to overlook. It may not give the driver special powers or create an automatic obligation for everyone else to stop. Its purpose is often much simpler: to make other road users aware that someone vulnerable is being transported.

Green lights usually ask for courtesy, not obedience. You are not expected to slam on your brakes, make a dangerous maneuver, or put yourself or another driver at risk. Safe driving must always come first, especially in busy or unpredictable traffic.

But when conditions allow, a little patience can make a meaningful difference. Leaving an extra gap, allowing the vehicle to merge, or avoiding an unnecessary delay can help a patient reach treatment without added stress or complication. A few seconds may seem insignificant to you, but they can matter greatly to someone already facing a difficult day.

We often judge vehicles by what we can see: their size, speed, appearance, or urgency. Yet the most important part of a vehicle is sometimes invisible—the person inside it and the reason for the journey. A simple green flash can be a reminder that not every important emergency looks dramatic.

So the next time you notice a flashing green light in traffic, take a breath and look carefully. Do not take unnecessary risks, but if you can safely give the vehicle a little space or time, consider doing so. You may never learn who was inside or what they were facing, but your small act of patience could help someone reach the care they desperately need.

  • 55 Years Ago, My High School Friends And I Promised To Meet At Our Lake — Yesterday Was That Day, And It Changed My Life My name is Harold, and back in 1970, the four of us, Tommy, Ray, Nick, and I, spent every single summer afternoon at the small lake just outside town, the kind of friendship you assume, at seventeen, will simply last forever without any effort. The night of our high school graduation, sitting on the same wooden bench we’d claimed as ours for years, we made a promise. Fifty-five years from that night, no matter where life took us, we’d all meet back at that bench, same spot, same lake. Life did what life does. Tommy’s family moved to Australia within a year. Ray ended up in Germany for work and never really came back. Nick married a woman from Portugal and settled there for good. I stayed close to home, the only one who never actually left. We wrote letters for a while, then postcards, then eventually nothing at all, the way these things quietly fade without anyone deciding to let them. I never forgot that promise, though. As the date crept closer this year, I told myself I wouldn’t get my hopes up, that fifty-five years was an impossible amount of time to ask three old men scattered across the globe to remember, let alone honor. Yesterday, I drove out to that same lake anyway, my hands unsteady on the wheel the whole way there. I walked down toward our old bench, and instead of my three friends, I found three large boxes sitting there, waiting for me. Type OK and I’ll continue.
