Chicken gizzards may not be the first food people think of when planning a healthy diet, but these inexpensive organ meats provide several important nutrients. Popular in many traditional dishes, they can be boiled, stewed, grilled, or added to soups while offering protein, vitamins, and minerals that support normal body functions.

The gizzard is a muscular part of a chicken’s digestive system that helps grind food. Because it is made primarily of muscle tissue, it contains substantial protein, which helps maintain and repair muscles, supports immune function, and keeps you feeling full after meals.

One of their key nutrients is vitamin B12, which plays an essential role in red blood cell formation, nerve function, and DNA production. Getting enough B12 helps prevent deficiency-related problems, including certain types of anemia, weakness, and numbness. However, people with diagnosed deficiencies may still need supplements or medical treatment.

Chicken gizzards also provide iron, a mineral your body needs to produce hemoglobin, which carries oxygen through the bloodstream. Adequate iron intake helps support energy levels and normal physical performance. Although gizzards can contribute to iron intake, they cannot guarantee protection against anemia or replace treatment when a deficiency is present.

Another benefit is their zinc and selenium content. Zinc supports immune function, wound healing, and normal growth, while selenium contributes to thyroid hormone metabolism and antioxidant defenses. Gizzards also contain phosphorus, which helps maintain healthy bones and supports energy production.

Their protein content makes them a useful option for people trying to maintain muscle mass, especially when combined with resistance exercise and adequate sleep. However, overall protein intake and a varied diet matter more than relying on any single food.

Preparation also makes a difference. Deep-frying gizzards or cooking them with excessive oil and salt can increase their calorie and sodium content. Boiling, stewing, grilling, or adding them to vegetable-rich soups can be healthier alternatives. They should always be handled safely and cooked thoroughly to prevent foodborne illness.

Despite their nutritional benefits, chicken gizzards cannot replace every vitamin supplement. People with diagnosed deficiencies, restricted diets, or medical conditions may need specific supplements prescribed by a healthcare professional. Those with kidney problems or conditions affecting iron metabolism may also need individualized dietary advice.

Ultimately, chicken gizzards can be an affordable, nutritious addition to a balanced diet. They provide valuable protein and essential micronutrients, but the best approach is to combine them with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and other protein sources. If you take supplements for a diagnosed deficiency, consult your healthcare professional before changing your treatment.
