Why People Over 65 Shouldn’t Shower Every Day

While showering feels refreshing, experts advise older adults to cut back. After age 65, skin becomes thinner, drier, and more sensitive due to reduced collagen, elastin, and natural oils.

Daily hot showers and harsh soaps can strip the skin’s protective oils and disrupt its microbiome, leading to dryness, itching, irritation, and even infections.

Instead, dermatologists recommend showering just 2–3 times a week to maintain hygiene without damaging the skin barrier.

Tips for Skin-Friendly Showers:

  • Use warm—not hot—water
  • Choose gentle, moisturizing cleansers
  • Keep showers under 5 minutes
  • Pat skin dry with a soft towel
  • Apply a nourishing moisturizer afterward

This routine helps preserve skin health, reduce irritation, and support aging skin’s natural defenses.

It keeps us all orderly.” Jack looked at her. “Both our cars fit on the driveway, we’re not on the street.” “Still, two cars isn’t allowed. One house, one driveway, one car. The rule is for everyone,” she said with a tilt of her head. She left. We ignored her warning. Three days later, both of our cars had been towed. She stood outside, smiling widely. ME: “Wow! You really did it!” HER: “What’s so funny?!” ME: “Nothing. Just that YOU OWE US $25,000 NOW.” HER: nervous gulp “What—What do you mean?” I pointed at the mark on the tag, laughing. “Bet you overlooked that symbol!
