My pregnant neighbor from two houses downappeared on our porch just after sunset. One handgripped the railing while the other rested on herswollen belly. Her face was swollen from crying, and her eyes looked exhausted. The moment Iopened the door, she broke down. “I’m so sorry,”she sobbed. “I didn’t know where else to go.”

We had never been close, exchanging only politesmiles and occasional greetings. I guided her to theporch bench and wrapped my arms around her. Shetrembled as she cried, finally releasing the pain shehad been carrying. Behind me, my husband sighedimpatiently, his chair scraping across the floor.

Through broken breaths, she explained that herfiancé had left that afternoon. He packed hisbelongings, told her their baby was no longer partof his plans, and walked away. She had no familynearby and nobody she felt comfortable calling.Seeing our lights on, she had stopped, hopingsomeone might listen.

Before I could comfort her, my husband snapped,“Some women are born to be burdens. Tell thisdrama queen to go cry somewhere else.” I stared athim, stunned by his cruelty. Then I quietly told himto go inside. He rolled his eyes and disappearedinto the house.

I stayed beside her, listening as she described herfears about becoming a single mother. I offered nojudgment, only comfort. When she apologized forbeing such a mess, I shook my head and took twohundred-dollar bills from my wallet. It was groceryand gas money I could barely spare, but I pressed itinto her hand.

She stared at the money before bursting into tearsagain. This time, however, her crying came fromrelief. “Thank you,” she whispered. A little later, sheleft looking calmer, and I watched until shedisappeared down the street. I hoped she wouldfind the strength to rebuild her life.

A month later, my husband rushed into ourbedroom one Saturday morning. “Look outside,” hesaid. “There’s your drama queen. Why does shelook rich?” Through the window, I saw a blackluxury car and a driver holding its door open. Myneighbor stepped out, elegant, confident, andcompletely transformed.

She came to my door and handed me an envelopecontaining the same two hundred dollars. “I didn’tneed the money,” she explained. “But your kindnesssaved me when I felt worthless.” Then she gave mea velvet box containing a beautiful necklace. Myhusband later mocked her, calling her a rich charitygirl. I said nothing. Instead, I looked at him andrealized how deeply his cruelty had changed theway I saw him. For the first time, I seriouslyconsidered divorce and wondered why I hadaccepted so little kindness in my own marriage.
