At first glance, these dark berries might look like blackberries. But their elongated shape, tiny rounded segments, and small green stems reveal their identity: mulberries. Depending on variety and ripeness, they can range from red to deep purple or nearly black. Their striking color comes largely from natural plant pigments called anthocyanins.

Mulberries are the fruit of trees in the Morus genus. Unlike blackberries, which grow on brambles, mulberries grow on trees and tend to have a longer, softer shape. When fully ripe, they become juicy, sweet, and extremely delicate. What looks like one berry is actually a cluster of many small fruit segments.

One of their nutritional advantages is dietary fiber. Fiber supports normal digestion and can contribute to feelings of fullness. Mulberries also provide vitamin C, potassium, and other nutrients. Eating the whole fruit rather than drinking juice preserves its fiber and makes it easier to include fruit as part of a balanced diet.

Their deep purple-black color is associated with polyphenols, including anthocyanins. These plant compounds have attracted scientific interest because of their antioxidant activity. However, that does not mean mulberries can cure or prevent diseases. They are simply one nutritious food among many.

Fresh mulberries make a naturally sweet snack or dessert. Try them with plain yogurt, oatmeal, nuts, seeds, or other fruit. Dried mulberries are also available, but because their water has been removed, their natural sugars and calories are more concentrated. Some packaged versions may also contain added sugar.

Mulberry leaves are traditionally used to make tea, and researchers have studied compounds in the leaves for possible effects on carbohydrate metabolism. However, mulberry leaf products should not replace prescribed medical treatment, especially for people taking medication that affects blood sugar.

Fresh mulberries are delicate and spoil relatively quickly. Keep them refrigerated, avoid washing them until you are ready to eat them, and remove damaged fruit. If you have a large harvest, freezing them in a single layer before transferring them to a freezer bag can help preserve them.

The biggest takeaway is simple: mulberries are nutritious fruit, not a miracle cure. Their fiber, vitamin C, minerals, and colorful plant compounds make them a worthwhile addition to a varied diet. Enjoy them fresh, frozen, or with meals—but appreciate them for what they genuinely offer rather than exaggerated claims about detoxes, fat loss, or disease cures.

  • What the hell is this… found in my grandmother’s crockery cupboard 🧐🕰️ At first, I thought they were strange plastic bars, maybe cocktail accessories 🍹 or pieces of an old Christmas tree ornament 🎄. But no: they were glass, light, fragile, and obviously made with care ❤️. Thin lines, translucent colors—orange, yellow, green… Different shades, but all shaped the same way: thin, with a little “bun:g” next to them. I held them in my hand, wondering: what could they be used …⤵️
