I broke my arm and asked my husband to help me with our 5-month-old twins, but he refused, saying, “Moms don’t get sick days. You wanted kids, so you take care of them” — so I taught him a lesson he’d never forget. A couple of days ago, I fell down the stairs at home and broke my arm. The doctor put it in a cast and told me not to lift anything heavy for the next few weeks so it could heal properly. With 5-month-old twins, that was incredibly difficult. So I asked my husband, Derek, if he could at least take a day off once in a while, come home even an hour earlier from work, or work from home from time to time so he could help me with our sons. Derek rolled his eyes and said: “I have a job. I’m not going to sit around with the kids.” I tried to stay calm. “But Derek… my arm is broken. I’m in a cast. How am I supposed to handle two babies with one arm? I’m just asking you to help me A LITTLE.” He shrugged and said: “Well, sweetheart, you’re the one who wanted kids. So you take care of them. MOMS DON’T GET SICK DAYS OR DAYS OFF. That’s not my problem.” I nearly collapsed onto the couch right then because I was so shocked by what he’d said. I take care of our sons almost entirely on my own. I get up with them at night, feed them and rock them to sleep, change their diapers, take them for walks, take them to the doctor, and still clean the house and cook. Derek REALLY wanted kids too, and we’d planned the pregnancy together. Over the next few days, I became so exhausted that I asked my mom to come over and help with the babies. Then one day, my mom couldn’t come, and I couldn’t bathe the babies by myself. So I asked Derek again to help me. He crossed his arms and said: “I just got home from work. I’m tired. Why should I have to come home and take care of the kids too? You stay home and DO NOTHING ALL DAY.” So taking care of two babies at home meant doing nothing? I was completely stunned. But I’d had enough. It was time for Derek to LEARN HIS LESSON. So the next evening, when Derek came home from work, he went pale as a ghost. Oh yes, and that was only THE BEGINNING. Before the night was over, he was shouting: “NO! HOW DARE YOU?”

The cast on Hope’s right arm made fastening her five-month-old son’s sleeper almost impossible. Luke was on the floor beside her, Miles was crying, and her tea had gone cold. When Derek walked into the nursery, he didn’t ask if she was okay. He asked what she’d made for dinner.

Hope reminded him she’d fractured her arm falling down the stairs. The doctor had warned her not to lift the twins with it. Derek glanced at the cast and sighed. He’d worked ten hours and didn’t want to come home to “another shift.” Hope explained that she needed temporary help with baths, bottles, laundry, and nighttime wake-ups.

Instead, Derek looked at his injured wife and said, “Moms don’t get sick days.” Hope stared at him. She had spent months caring for their children, managing their home, and doing everything without a paycheck. Now, when she physically couldn’t do it safely, he treated her recovery like an inconvenience.

Over the next few days, Hope wrote down the tasks she couldn’t safely handle and placed the list in front of him. Derek refused. He wasn’t doing “shifts” in his own home. That was when Hope stopped trying to convince him. She packed a diaper bag, called her mother, Noelle, and took the twins to her house.

Hope told Derek she wasn’t ending their marriage. She was giving her arm a chance to heal. At first, Derek worried more about how her leaving looked than why she’d needed to leave. But his own mother asked him a question he couldn’t answer: “Why should Hope have to leave her home just to receive help?”

During a visit, Miles began crying. Hope didn’t automatically take him. Derek picked up his son, paced around the room, adjusted his hold, and eventually calmed him. For the first time, he admitted that Hope wasn’t naturally better at parenting. She was simply experienced because she’d been doing it every day.

Over the next few weeks, Derek changed. He left work earlier twice a week, learned the twins’ routines, attended appointments, and began taking responsibility without being reminded. When Hope eventually brought some belongings home, she made one thing clear: she would never again wait until she was physically broken before asking for help.

One evening, Miles cried from the nursery. Hope instinctively started to stand, but Derek was already walking down the hall. “I’ve got him,” he said. “That’s his tired cry.” Minutes later, the house became quiet. Hope looked down at the tea in her hands and smiled. For the first time in months, it was still warm.

Previous Post: When I broke my leg, my husband refused to drive our kids to school because he “couldn’t be late for work” — then I caught him picking up his attractive coworker, so I decided to teach him a lesson. “Honey, you understand that the kids’ school is all the way across town. I can’t make that huge detour. I’ll end up being late for work,” my husband, Harold, kept telling me after I broke my leg. We have two kids, and I usually drove them to school every day, but obviously, with my leg in a cast, that became impossible. Sometimes I asked my mom to come over and drive the kids to school, even though she lived an hour away from us. Other times, I had to ask our neighbor, which was extremely inconvenient. No matter how many times I asked Harold to wake up earlier so he’d have enough time to drop the kids off at school or occasionally work remotely so he could take them, he stubbornly refused, saying it was all too inconvenient for him. Not to mention the fact that Harold rarely helped me around the house or with the kids in general, so I was doing everything I could while balancing on one leg and using crutches. One day, as usual, I asked our neighbor to drive the kids to school while I took a taxi to the hospital. I had an appointment to have my leg checked. When I came out of the hospital, I saw Harold’s car parked nearby. What was Harold doing in this neighborhood so early in the morning? Then I saw Adele get into his car, and they drove off in the direction of their office. Adele was Harold’s coworker. She was young, slim, and beautiful. Well, of course. Why make a detour to drive your own kids to school when you can make a detour to pick up your attractive coworker and drive to the office together? I hadn’t expected that from Harold. That evening at home, I told him I’d seen him picking Adele up on the way to work. Harold just shrugged and said: “Honey, I pick her up because Adele’s car broke down and it’s in the shop. Why wouldn’t I? We work in the same office anyway.” I could barely contain myself. “Harold, you’d rather drive to another neighborhood to pick up your coworker than take your own kids to school?” He just smiled and said: “Oh, what’s the big deal? You have your mom and our neighbor who can drive the kids to school. Who else is supposed to give Adele a ride? Coworkers need help too.” My jaw nearly dropped. It was obvious that he found it much more enjoyable to drive his attractive coworker around than to take his own children to school. Well, Harold, it was time for you to learn a lesson. The next morning, before Harold left to pick up Adele again, I left something for him on the front seat. Only an hour later, Harold called me and screamed: “Oh God, what have you done? Now Adele and everyone at work are completely shocked. How am I supposed to face everyone at the office now?”
