Dry, cracked heels often start as mild roughness but can gradually become thick, flaky skin that develops small fissures. In more severe cases, these cracks may deepen and cause pain when walking or standing.

The main cause is repeated pressure on the heel combined with dryness. Factors like hot showers, walking barefoot, open-back shoes, long standing hours, and naturally dry skin all reduce elasticity, making the skin more likely to split under stress.

A simple and widely recommended treatment is plain petroleum jelly. It does not remove dead skin but instead forms a protective barrier that locks in moisture. This helps keep the skin softer, more flexible, and less likely to crack further.

A basic nighttime routine starts by soaking the feet in warm water for a few minutes. This softens thick skin and prepares the heel for care. After soaking, the feet should be gently patted dry, leaving slight moisture on the skin.

Next, any loose dead skin can be carefully removed using a pumice stone or soft file, without aggressive scraping. After that, a generous layer of petroleum jelly is applied to the heels, focusing on dry or cracked areas.

Cotton socks are then worn overnight to keep the product in place and improve absorption. With consistent use, many people notice softer skin within a few days, while deeper cracks may take one to two weeks of regular care.

For thicker calluses, creams with urea, salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids may provide stronger softening. Supportive footwear is also important, as open sandals and flip-flops can worsen pressure and delay healing.

Medical attention is needed if cracks bleed, become painful, show signs of infection, or do not improve after several weeks. People with diabetes should be especially careful. Overall, consistent moisture and gentle care are key to recovery.

  • I found this in my son’s room while cleaning. When I tried to vacuum under the bed, I discovered this. For a moment, I froze, then pulled myself together and started carefully examining it, trying to understand what it was — but I still couldn’t figure it out. Does anyone know what this could be?
