If you’ve ever opened your car door to foggy windows and a stale, musty smell, you’re not alone—especially if you drive an older vehicle. Moisture buildup inside cars is common and can make driving uncomfortable, or even unhealthy. The good news is that the solution may already be in your kitchen.

Plain table salt is a simple, natural way to reduce moisture in your car. Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it naturally absorbs  water from the air. When placed inside your vehicle, it helps pull excess humidity from the interior, which can reduce window fog and prevent that lingering damp smell.

Using salt is easy. Fill a small container, bowl, or jar with dry salt and place it on the dashboard, in a cup holder, or under a seat. Over time, the salt absorbs moisture and may become clumpy—this is your sign to replace it. There’s no need for batteries, sprays, or expensive devices.

By reducing moisture, salt also helps limit mold and mildew growth, which often causes unpleasant odors and can irritate allergies or breathing sensitivities. This is especially helpful for cars that sit unused for long periods or are parked outdoors. As vehicles age, seals weaken and moisture sneaks in more easily. Taking a small preventive step like this can protect your car’s interior, improve air quality, and make every drive more comfortable. Sometimes, the simplest solutions truly work best.

  • SHE WAS EXCITED FOR HER FIRST FLIGHT—BUT I WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE THERE I wasn’t supposed to be on that plane. Not with them, anyway. My ex, Dariel, had custody for the week and was taking our daughter, Lyla, to visit his sister in Denver. I knew the trip was happening, but what he didn’t know—what no one knew—was that I’d booked myself a seat on the same flight. Call it paranoia, or maybe just mother’s instinct. Something felt off. Dariel had been acting weird—too polite, too agreeable—ever since the custody hearing didn’t go his way. And Lyla? She’d mentioned “a big surprise” Daddy was planning. So yeah, I booked the last seat I could get, back row, opposite side. I wore a hat and kept my head low as they boarded. When Lyla smiled and gave those double thumbs up from the aisle seat, I felt a lump in my throat. She had no idea I was just a few rows away, watching, trying to act normal. Dariel looked tense. He kept checking his watch and staring at his phone like he was waiting for something—or someone. We hit cruising altitude, and I saw him pull out a manila envelope from his carry-on. He didn’t open it right away. He just stared at it. Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out something else: a folded piece of paper with handwriting I recognized but hadn’t seen in months. It was mine.full story in the comments
