While hiking, driving through rural areas, or exploring woodland in parts of the United States, you may notice vertical purple paint marks on trees or fence posts. Although they can look decorative or accidental, in some states these markings can serve as legally recognized notice that property is private and entry is restricted.

Purple-paint laws exist because traditional signs can be difficult to maintain across large rural properties. Signs may deteriorate, become hidden by vegetation, fall down, or be removed. Paint applied directly to trees or posts provides landowners with another way to communicate property boundaries without installing a separate sign at every location.

The legal meaning of purple paint varies by state. Laws may specify the color, size, orientation, height, spacing, and visibility of qualifying marks. Therefore, it is incorrect to assume that every purple mark automatically means “no trespassing” throughout the United States.

Arkansas was an early adopter of this approach. Legislation enacted in 1989 established a paint-based method for posting property, with requirements concerning vertical marks, placement, spacing, and visibility. Arkansas later designated light purple exterior-grade paint for this purpose.

Texas provides another example. Its law allows qualifying vertical purple marks to provide notice that entry is forbidden. The marks must meet specific requirements for dimensions, height, visibility, and spacing. Forest land and other land have different maximum spacing requirements.

North Carolina uses purple paint somewhat differently. Its posting law addresses activities including hunting, fishing, and trapping. Qualifying marks must meet requirements for length, height, spacing, and visibility, and unauthorized hunting, fishing, or trapping on properly posted land can result in an offense.

Not every purple mark has legal significance. Paint on trees can also indicate forestry work, surveying, utilities, construction, or trail routes. However, repeated vertical purple marks along what appears to be a private boundary should be treated cautiously. Do not remove, alter, paint over, climb around, or otherwise bypass marked boundaries or fences.

The safest approach is to verify access before entering unfamiliar land. Check current state rules, maps, trail information, or contact the property owner or land manager when necessary. Purple paint is not a nationwide legal code, but when properly used under state law, it can provide an important warning that visitors should respect.
