The refrigerator is another area where manners matter. Even when someone says “make yourself at home,” that does not necessarily mean opening every cabinet or searching through their food. Wait until they invite you to help yourself, and clean up immediately if you accidentally spill something.
Bedrooms should generally be considered private spaces, even if a door is open. If you are looking for the bathroom or another room, ask rather than wandering around. Pets also require permission before touching, since some animals may be nervous, protective, elderly, or working service animals.
Ultimately, being a good guest means assuming that personal spaces and belongings are private unless you are told otherwise. Compliment decorations, enjoy the hospitality, and respect boundaries. If you accidentally touch or damage something, apologize sincerely and take responsibility rather than pretending nothing happened.
