A retired teacher’s blunt letter about responsibility in public education has continued to circulate years after it first appeared. Lisa Roberson wrote the open letter, which was published by the Augusta Chronicle in 2017. Her central argument was direct: teachers are frequently blamed for struggling schools even though many classroom problems begin with responsibilities that schools cannot fulfill on behalf of families.
Roberson objected to people who prescribe solutions for public schools without recent classroom experience. She argued that teachers were not the main problem and placed much of the blame on parents who fail to teach manners, respect, and the basic ability to work with others. Her frustration reflected the daily reality of educators who must teach academic material while also managing behavior that prevents an entire class from learning.
One of her most vivid examples concerned school supplies. She described children arriving in expensive shoes but without pencils or paper, leaving teachers to provide necessities with their own money. The comparison was meant to question priorities, not to suggest that clothing alone proves neglect. At the same time, Roberson’s argument should not be turned into a claim that every struggling student has careless parents. Families face poverty, unstable housing, disability, language barriers, demanding work schedules, limited transportation, and lack of access to health care or technology. Some parents are deeply involved but still cannot overcome every obstacle. A child should not be blamed or denied support because adults and institutions have failed to solve those conditions.
Schools and governments also carry responsibilities that parents cannot replace. Class sizes, teacher pay, safe buildings, special education services, qualified staff, useful curricula, and fair funding are policy choices. An attentive parent cannot repair a leaking school roof or hire another counselor. Likewise, a dedicated teacher cannot guarantee that every student has food, quiet study space, or consistent adult supervision at home.
The strongest lesson from the letter is therefore about partnership. Parents should teach respect, respond to schools, provide supplies when able, follow attendance and homework, and take concerns seriously. Teachers should communicate clearly, maintain fair expectations, adapt instruction, and treat students with dignity. Administrators should support classroom discipline and make it possible for families to participate. Public officials should provide resources instead of demanding results without the conditions required to achieve them.
The date of the letter matters as well. Roberson wrote before the COVID pandemic disrupted schooling and forced families and educators into unfamiliar forms of remote instruction. Those years exposed how closely education depends on the connection between home and school. They also increased learning gaps and stress, making simple blame less useful than practical cooperation.
Roberson’s tone was deliberately forceful, which is why people continue to debate it. Readers who have seen teachers spend their own money and lose teaching time to preventable problems may hear overdue honesty. Parents who are working hard under difficult circumstances may hear an unfair generalization. Both reactions point to the same fact: education is shaped by more than what happens during a lesson.
The letter remains valuable when it starts a specific conversation rather than ending one. Are families reachable? Do students have materials? Are teachers supported when classrooms are disrupted? Can parents attend meetings at realistic times? Are schools funded to meet needs they cannot solve alone? Honest answers distribute responsibility more accurately. Children benefit most when adults stop using blame as an escape and begin doing the parts that only they can do.
