I never expected to fall in love with Jason. Ourmarriage had been arranged by our parents tostrengthen a business partnership. I was onlytwenty, and Jason was twenty-one. We had justtwo months to get to know each other before ourwedding. Neither of us knew whether love couldgrow between two strangers.
A few months after our wedding, I discovered Iwas pregnant. We were both shocked, but when Itold Jason I wanted to keep the baby, hesupported me. When our daughter, Lily, was born,Jason surprised me by taking a year off work tohelp raise her. He attended every appointment, stayed awake during sleepless nights, andbecame the most devoted father.
Now Lily was seven months old, and we werevisiting Jason’s parents. Everyone was gatheredaround her, showering her with attention. Iwatched Jason helping his mother preparedinner and wondered whether he was truly happywith the life we had built. Sometimes I worriedthat our marriage had happened too quickly.
As I walked toward the kitchen, I overheardJason talking to his mother. “I don’t know whatI’d do without Aria and Lily, Mom,” he said.“Before them, I only cared about parties andhaving fun. Now I wake up grateful for the life Ihave. Aria has made me a better man, and Lilyhas taught me what real love means.”
His mother smiled. “I’m glad you foundhappiness, son. I was worried about thisarrangement, but look at the beautiful familyyou’ve created.”
Tears filled my eyes. I had spent monthswondering whether Jason regretted marryingme, never realizing how deeply he loved us.
That evening, after putting Lily to bed, Jasonnoticed my silence. I finally confessed that I’doverheard his conversation. He lookedembarrassed but gently held my hand.
“Everything I said was true, Aria. You and Lily aremy whole world.”
The following evening, I prepared his favoritedinner, decorated our home with candles, andleft little love notes around the house.
As we sat together, I realized somethingbeautiful: Our marriage may have been arranged, but our love was entirely our own.
