Leaving windshield wipers raised has become a common sight in both snowy streets and hot parking lots. Many drivers believe this simple habit protects the rubber blades and prevents damage, especially during extreme weather conditions.

In winter, the main reason for lifting wipers is to stop them from freezing to the windshield. Ice can glue the rubber to the glass, making it difficult to clear snow and potentially tearing the blade when forced.

By keeping them upright, drivers can remove ice and snow more easily. This can save time in the morning and reduce the risk of damaging the rubber when starting the car in freezing temperatures.

Some people also raise wipers during very hot weather. The idea is to prevent the rubber from sticking to overheated glass, which may help preserve the blade’s condition for a longer time.

However, this habit is not always as helpful as it seems. Even when raised, wipers are still exposed to sunlight, heat, and air, all of which contribute to natural wear and aging over time.

There are also risks involved. A raised wiper arm can accidentally snap back onto the windshield, potentially cracking the glass or damaging the blade itself if not handled carefully.

Additionally, not all cars are designed for this. Some vehicles require a special service position before lifting the wipers, and ignoring this can cause unnecessary strain or damage.

In the end, raising wipers can be useful in certain situations, but it is not a complete solution. Regular maintenance, careful handling, and timely replacement are what truly ensure clear visibility and safe driving.
