After working for three years without a single day off, I finally requested my full 90 days of leave. I thought my dedication had earned me some understanding, but HR called my request “too long” and even suggested I find another job if I was “this lazy.”

I was shocked. Three years of putting work first, sacrificing my personal time, and showing up without a break seemed to mean nothing the moment I asked for rest. I had expected a discussion about scheduling, not insults.

Instead of arguing, I calmly told them I would work two days a week until the end of the year. Everyone seemed convinced I would eventually give in and return to my usual routine. They had grown accustomed to me always being available.

What they didn’t know was that I had already started interviewing with competitors. I planned to use my approved vacation to explore better opportunities and decide what I wanted from my career. I wasn’t going to make another decision based solely on my employer’s expectations.

Still, one thing bothered me: leaving during the company’s busiest season. I knew my departure could create difficulties for my colleagues, and I didn’t want them to suffer because of a disagreement with HR. Part of me wondered whether quitting at such a critical time would make me seem spiteful.

But another part of me questioned why I was responsible for protecting a company that had shown so little concern for my well-being. If the business depended on me sacrificing every day off, perhaps the real problem was how it was managed.

I had spent three years proving my loyalty, yet requesting time to rest was enough to make me feel disposable. I realized that no amount of dedication could guarantee respect if my employer refused to recognize my limits.

Now, I’m choosing to put my future first. I don’t want to quit simply to punish anyone; I want to find a workplace where commitment goes both ways. Sometimes, walking away isn’t revenge. It’s understanding that your time, health, and happiness matter just as much as your job.
