Justin Drew Bieber born March 1, 1994) is a Canadian singer. He is recognized for his genre-melding musicianship and global influence in modern-day popular music. Bieber was discovered by American record executive Scooter Braun and signed with RBMG Records in 2008, gaining recognition with the release of his debut seven-track EP My World (2009) and soon establishing himself as a teen idol.

which became one of the best selling singles of all time in the US. His second studio album, Under the Mistletoe (2011), became the first Christmas album by a male artist to debut at number one in the US.

Bieber experimented with dance-pop in his third studio album, Believe (2012), and went on to become the first artist in history with five US number-one albums by the age of 18. From 2013–14, Bieber was involved in multiple controversies and legal issues, which had a drastic impact on his public image. In 2015, Bieber explored EDM with Jack Ü as a lead vocalist on “Where Are Ü Now”, which won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording. The song’s musical direction played an instrumental role in his fourth studio album, Purpose, which produced three US number-one singles: “Love Yourself”, “Sorry”, and “What Do You Mean?”

He became the first artist in history to occupy the entire top three of the UK Singles Chart. Bieber diversified on numerous collaborations between 2016 and 2017, including “I’m the One” and his remix to “Despacito”—both reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 a week apart, making him the first artist in history to chart new number-one songs in consecutive weeks.

“Despacito” was named the greatest Latin song of all time by Billboard and earned Bieber his career-first Latin Grammy Award. In 2019, he released a country collaboration with Dan + Shay, “10,000 Hours”, which won the Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

Across these releases, Bieber’s career is marked by a repeated shift in musical setting. The early recordings introduced him to a young pop audience, while later projects placed his voice within dance music and collaborations that reached listeners beyond that initial audience. The progression described here is not confined to a single album or one successful partnership. It runs through several different phases of his recording work.

The contrast between Under the Mistletoe and Purpose illustrates that range. One album worked within the familiar seasonal setting of Christmas music; the other became associated with a run of contemporary pop singles and an electronic influence. Believe occupies another point in that development, reflecting an earlier move toward dance-pop as his career expanded beyond the first wave of teenage success.

Collaboration is another recurring thread. Work with Jack Ü brought his vocals into an electronic production, while the Despacito remix connected him with a major Latin music release. The later recording with Dan + Shay placed him in a country collaboration. These examples show how the same recognizable voice can be presented differently through the performers, production choices, and musical traditions surrounding it.

Taken together, the releases and partnerships trace a career shaped by both continuity and change. The audience first encountered a young singer through My World, but the later catalogue moved through several musical contexts. That ability to participate in different sounds is central to the account of his development from an early teen idol into an artist associated with a broader range of popular music.

  • A homeless man held up a sign that read, “Marry me. I have only one month left to live” — I agreed out of pity, but the letter I received after his funeral made the blood drain from my face. I passed Larry every morning on my way to the office. He was a quiet, respectful homeless man who usually sat outside my subway stop. Over the past two years, we’d developed a simple routine. I’d bring him a black coffee, and we’d talk about the weather for a few minutes before I hurried off to work. But on a freezing Tuesday morning last month, he wasn’t asking anyone for spare change. Instead, he was holding a piece of cardboard that read: “Marry me. I have only one month left to live.” I stopped and crouched beside him, handing him his usual coffee. “Larry, what is this?” I asked, confused. He looked awful—paler than normal, his hands shaking as he took the cup. “The clinic gave me a month,” he said hoarsely, staring down at the pavement. “Liver failure.” “I’m so sorry,” I whispered, completely caught off guard. “But… marriage?” “I just don’t want to die as a John Doe, Sarah,” he said quietly, his eyes filling with tears. “I want to belong to someone on paper. I want someone to claim my ashes instead of letting the city put me in an unmarked grave.” I’ve always been more empathetic than was probably good for me. I was single, practical, and my heart broke for him. Two days later, we went to the city courthouse and signed the papers. It wasn’t a real marriage in the traditional sense. It was simply a legal arrangement to give a dying man some dignity. Exactly three weeks later, Larry passed away in a state hospice facility. Yesterday, when I checked my mail, I found a thick envelope waiting for me, postmarked the day before he died. I sat down at my kitchen table and unfolded the handwritten pages, fully expecting a sweet and heartbreaking thank-you letter. But by the time I finished reading the first few sentences, all the color had drained from my face.
