Later, a family who followed the page contacted it about photographs taken earlier that morning at nearby Carrum Beach. The timing prompted an obvious question about whether their picture showed the same animal.

Others looked at the depth of the water and the position of nearby beachgoers and doubted that a large shark could have passed so close without attracting attention. Those comparisons did not settle the question. A single photograph compresses distance, and a partially visible object is difficult to identify without a clearer view.
