When this snake enters your house, it means you have… see more

Finding a snake inside your home can be terrifying, but the safest response is to stay calm and keep your distance. Don’t approach it to identify the species. If you are unsure whether it is venomous, treat it cautiously and avoid getting close enough to examine its head, markings, or behavior.

Your first priority should be creating distance and limiting where the snake can go. If it is safe, leave the room, close the door, and place a towel along the gap underneath. Move children and pets away from the area, and avoid chasing, cornering, poking, or trying to kill the snake. A frightened snake may defend itself when it feels threatened.

Next, contact the appropriate professional for help. Animal control or a qualified wildlife-removal service can safely handle a snake, particularly if it is large, inaccessible, or potentially venomous. Emergency services are generally unnecessary unless someone has been bitten or there is another immediate medical emergency.

If you suspect the snake is venomous, do not attempt to capture or kill it. Keep everyone, including pets, away from the room and wait for trained professionals. Most snakebites happen when people accidentally step on, surprise, handle, or attempt to kill snakes. Leaving the animal alone greatly reduces the risk.

After the snake has been removed, focus on prevention. Inspect your home for gaps around foundations, doors, windows, pipes, vents, and crawl spaces. Keep grass and vegetation trimmed, remove piles of wood and debris, and address rodent problems. Snakes often enter homes because they are following food or seeking shelter.

Garages deserve special attention because they are frequently dark, cluttered, and accessible to rodents. Install a tight seal beneath the garage door, close gaps around windows and side doors, reduce clutter, and store belongings in sealed plastic containers rather than cardboard boxes.

Seeing one snake does not necessarily mean you have an infestation. Snakes are generally solitary, and another may appear only if the same food or shelter conditions remain. Commercial snake repellents are also not consistently proven to work, making exclusion and pest control the most reliable strategies.

Most snakes are simply wild animals trying to survive. You don’t have to like them, but you can respond without panic. Step back, isolate the area if possible, keep people and pets away, and call trained professionals. Staying calm and giving the snake space is usually the safest choice.
